Part 1/Week 3: How do we know being learning centered will improve student learning?

Excerpts From Cynthia Wilson’s recent essay, “The Learning College: How Do We Know?”

Terry O’Banion posed two central questions: Does the Learning College movement improve and expand student learning? How do we know? That’s a tough one.

The goal of the Learning College Project was to create a network of community colleges focused on becoming more learning centered. The League for Innovation has expanded and nurtured the Learning College movement through publications and annual Innovations conference and the annual Learning College Summit. There have been many successes and we’ve learned much. Yet, that doesn’t tell us whether or not the movement is effective.

Again: How do we know?

In his presentations, O’Banion advises leaders to “gather up the innovations.” So, that’s why we are looking to you—to share the practices, programs and processes across your college that have worked best. Creating categories such as promising practices or high-impact practices allows teams to work as a team in the progression needed to produce results.

Some suggestions by Cynthia Wilson:
• Talk to colleagues
• Create the map
• Ask the right questions
• Evaluate, evaluate, evaluate
